A machine goes down in Encinitas and we drive to it. A machine goes down in Pasadena, or Boise, or a classroom in Ohio, and driving is not the answer — but neither is giving up. Here are the three ways we actually get printers running again, what each one can and cannot do, and how to pack a printer so it survives the trip.

First, a correction to our own marketing

For years the line on our repair page has been skip the shipping, we come to you. That is still true, and it is still the best way to fix a printer — if you live in San Diego County. Said to anyone else, it quietly implies we cannot help, which is not true and never was.

The honest version is that distance does not decide whether we can fix your machine. It decides which of three methods we use. On-site is the fastest and the most thorough, so San Diego County gets a van. Beyond that, a video call solves a surprising share of faults outright, and for the ones it cannot, the printer comes to the bench. Los Angeles County is the interesting middle case, and we will get to why we do not simply drive up the 5.

Free troubleshooting by email or text before any of those, because a good number of problems never need a paid visit at all.

Which method your printer actually needs

We route by fault type, not by zip code. Zip code only decides what happens once the fault is identified. The table below is roughly how the first text message gets triaged.

01 · On-site

San Diego County: we drive to you

Mobile repair at your home, office, classroom, makerspace, or shop floor. We bring tools and common parts, diagnose at the machine, quote before any paid work starts, and leave the printer printing rather than merely reassembled.

The reason this stays our default inside the county is not convenience. It is that the machine gets diagnosed in the environment it actually fails in — the same bench, the same power, the same garage humidity. A printer that misbehaves in a Pacific Beach garage and behaves perfectly on our bench has told us something important, and we would have missed it.

02 · Virtual

Los Angeles County and all fifty states: we watch your hands

A scheduled video session where you point a camera at the machine and we run the same triage we would run standing next to it. You supply the hands and the screwdriver. We supply the routing, the part numbers, and the knowledge of which forum fix applies to your architecture and which one is about a completely different machine.

This is not a support script and it is not a chatbot. It is the same technician who would have shown up in a van, looking at your printer through your phone.

What a video session genuinely resolves

  • Error-code triage. Reading the fault family off the code, then watching the machine reproduce the failure — which is the step that splits one error message into four different repairs.
  • Feed and extrusion faults. Cutting a deformed tip, bypassing the AMS to split the chain in half, cold pulls, flow-rate checks against the actual material rather than the profile default.
  • First-layer and adhesion work. Plate seating, surface-to-material matching, degreasing, Z-offset, and the debris under the sheet that nobody thinks to look for.
  • Calibration and slicer settings. We can screen-share into your slicer and fix a profile directly.
  • Parts identification before you spend money. This is the single most valuable thing we do remotely. Toolhead covers and carriages across one manufacturer's model lines look identical in photos and are not interchangeable; some parts are side-specific; some are only sold inside a larger assembly. Ordering wrong turns a one-week repair into a three-week one.
  • Guided part swaps. Nozzle, hotend, PTFE run, FEP film, build plate, screen protector — we stay on the call while you do it, including the re-level and the verification print afterward.
  • Buy-versus-fix judgment. An honest read on whether the repair is worth it before you commit, which is its own whole conversation.

What a video session cannot do

Being straight about this matters more than the sales pitch, because booking the wrong service wastes your money and our time.

  • Anything that needs torque or feel. Belt tension, eccentric nuts, gantry squaring, FEP tensioning. You can be talked through the motions; you cannot be talked through what correct feels like in your fingers.
  • Electrical diagnosis past the obvious. Without a meter at the machine and a known-good spare to swap against, a dead sensor and a dead board segment look the same over a camera.
  • Board and harness work. A toolhead board swap is a careful teardown followed by a full calibration pass. It is a bench job.
  • Contamination cleanup. If resin has leaked below the vat bay, the right advice over video is power it off and stop, not a cleaning tutorial.
  • Verification. We can watch your test print through a lens. We cannot pick the part up, flex it, and measure it.

Why Los Angeles gets a camera and not a van

Downtown LA is about 120 miles from our bench. A round trip is most of a working day in traffic, and that day has to be priced into the visit. For a genuine mechanical repair that cost is defensible; for a clogged nozzle it is absurd, and for a board fault the printer would be better off on the bench anyway.

So Los Angeles County, Orange County, the Inland Empire, and the Conejo and Simi Valleys get the two lanes that actually make sense at that distance: a video session first, then ship-in if the fault needs hands. 03 · Ship-in

Anywhere in the US: the printer comes to the bench

You box the machine and send it to our Carmel Valley facility. We intake it, diagnose it, and send you a quote with a timeline before any paid work begins. Once it is approved we repair it, run a full calibration pass, print a verification part, photograph the result, repack it, and ship it back.

The part owners tend to underestimate is the end of that list. A repair is not finished when the part is installed — it is finished when the machine prints. Every ship-in job leaves here having printed something.

What happens when your box arrives

  1. Intake. Photographed on arrival, before anything is opened, so transit damage is documented separately from the fault you sent it for.
  2. Reproduce. We make the machine fail the way you described it. If it will not fail for us, we say so rather than replacing parts speculatively.
  3. Diagnose and quote. Subsystem identified, parts priced, timeline given. You approve before we spend your money. If the answer is this is not worth repairing, that is the answer you get.
  4. Repair. Customer-supplied parts are welcome. If we think the part you bought is not the fault, we will tell you before it goes in.
  5. Calibrate and verify. Full calibration pass, then a test print, then photos of the print.
  6. Repack and return. Back in its original packaging where you sent it, or repacked to the same standard where you did not.

When shipping is worth it — and when it is not

Round-trip freight on a mid-size FDM printer is not trivial, and it is money spent before a single repair has happened. There is a real threshold here and we would rather you hear it from us.

Usually worth it: an enclosed CoreXY or large-format machine, a resin printer with an LCD or light-engine fault, anything with a board or harness problem, a printer that earns money and is sitting idle, a machine still under warranty where you want a diagnosis in writing before you argue with anyone, and print farms sending two or three units in one shipment.

Usually not worth it: an entry-level printer whose replacement cost is close to freight plus parts, a fault we can talk you through in one video session, and anything where the honest answer is that the machine has reached the end of a sensible service life. Ask us before you buy a shipping label. We will tell you which category you are in, and that conversation is free.

How to pack a 3D printer so it survives the trip

More ship-in printers arrive damaged from packing than from carrier abuse. The pattern is almost always the same: the heavy moving mass inside the machine was left free to travel. Below is the sequence we ask for. Manufacturer guidance is the authority here, so start with your own machine's guide — Bambu Lab publishes per-model packing guides and Prusa publishes step-by-step packing guides for theirs.

STEP 01

Check warranty and safety notices before you touch anything

If the machine is in warranty, the manufacturer may owe you this repair. Confirm in writing whether a third-party install affects your coverage. Check for open recalls on your model as well — that outranks whatever you were about to ship it for. And on a machine with an account bound to it, do a factory reset before it leaves your hands; Bambu Lab's own packing documentation asks for this before a printer ships back.

STEP 02

Empty it

FDM: unload the filament, roll it back onto the spool, and remove the spools. Resin: drain the vat through a filter back into an opaque bottle, then clean the vat and plate thoroughly. Nothing liquid ships. Uncured resin sloshing inside a box in a truck is how a film replacement turns into a board replacement.

STEP 03

Immobilize every axis

This is the step that decides whether your printer arrives working. Zip-tie the toolhead to the gantry and the gantry to the frame. Lower the heatbed onto its foam pad or its shipping screws. Fit the lead-screw protectors if your machine came with them. On bed-slinger designs, secure the bed at the end of its travel. If the original foam inserts exist, they are engineered for exactly this — use them.

STEP 04

Remove the fragile add-ons and pack them separately

Screen or bezel where it detaches, spool holder, AMS or multi-material unit and its buffer, PTFE runs, glass panels, vat, build plate. Wrap each one on its own. Detachable screens and glass are the most commonly broken parts we see on arrival, and they are the easiest to protect.

STEP 05

Use the original box, or build a proper double box

Original packaging is the single best thing you can do, which is the case for keeping it. Without it, UPS's own packaging guidance is the standard to hit: wrap the printer with at least two inches of cushioning on every face and keep it at least two inches from every wall, then use the two-box method for fragile goods — an outer box six inches larger in each dimension than the inner one, with roughly three inches of cushioning filling the gap. Use anti-static cushioning against electronics. Shake the sealed box; if anything moves inside, it is not done.

STEP 06

Declare the value and seal it properly

Carrier default liability is low — UPS, for example, covers $100 unless you declare a higher value when the label is created, and a claim can still be denied if the packaging was inadequate. Declare what the machine is actually worth. Seal with two-inch or wider packing tape across every seam, top and bottom. Not masking tape, not duct tape, not string.

STEP 07

Put a note in the box and tell us it is coming

Inside the box: your name, phone, email, the printer model, and what it does wrong in your own words — including what you already tried. Outside the box: nothing identifying its contents as valuable. Then text or email us the tracking number so we are watching for it. Symptoms written down at the moment you packed it are worth more than a summary from memory three days later.

Do not ship these, ever. Isopropyl alcohol, uncured resin, cleaning solvents, or any partly full liquid container. These are regulated hazardous materials with real packaging, labeling, and transport rules — USPS publishes the mailability standards in Publication 52, and carrier rules vary. Loose lithium cells have their own restrictions. Drain, clean, and leave all of it at home; we stock what a repair needs.

What we do not take on

The scope lines are the same whichever lane you are in, and they do not move for a shipped-in machine.

  • We do not print metal, flight hardware, firearm components, load-bearing or safety-critical parts, or patient-contact medical devices.
  • We are not affiliated with any printer manufacturer, we sell no printers, and we hold no affiliate relationships with the brands named here. That is also why we will tell you when a machine is not worth fixing.
  • We cannot promise a fault is repairable before we have seen it. Discontinued parts and unavailable boards are a real limit on old machines, and we say so rather than holding your printer hostage while we hunt.
  • Repair pricing is quoted per job after diagnosis, never before. Anyone quoting a 3D printer repair sight-unseen is guessing.

One more thing worth knowing: if your machine is down and a deadline is not, we can run the parts for you on ours while the repair happens — FDM from $7/hr and resin from $9/hr of machine time, plus material. Deadlines do not care whose printer made the part.

Common questions

Do you really repair 3D printers outside San Diego?

Yes, in two ways. Virtual repair — a scheduled video session where we diagnose and talk you through the fix — is available in Los Angeles County and every other state. Ship-in repair, where the printer comes to our Carmel Valley bench and goes back to you repaired, calibrated, and test-printed, is available from anywhere in the US. On-site visits are San Diego County only.

Why not just drive to Los Angeles?

Because a round trip to LA County is most of a working day, and that time has to be priced into the visit. For a clog or a calibration problem a video call fixes it in a fraction of the time and cost. For a board or motion fault, the printer is better off on a bench with a meter and spare parts than in a driveway. Those two lanes cover the LA cases better than a van would.

What does a virtual 3D printer repair session actually involve?

You describe the fault by text or email first, because a fair number of problems get solved right there for free. If it needs a session, we schedule a video call, you point a camera at the machine, and we run the same triage we would run in person: read the code, reproduce the failure, bypass to split the chain, do the reversible zero-cost fixes, then identify the exact part if one is needed. You keep the machine the whole time, and you end the call knowing what is wrong even if the repair itself takes a part order.

What can a video call not fix on a 3D printer?

Anything needing torque or feel — belt tension, gantry squaring, FEP tensioning. Electrical diagnosis past the obvious, because that needs a meter and a known-good spare to swap against. Board and harness work. Resin contamination cleanup, where the right remote advice is to power off and stop. And verification, because we cannot pick your test print up and measure it. When a fault lands in that list we will say so on the call rather than billing you for an hour of guessing.

How do I pack a 3D printer for shipping?

Empty it first — filament unloaded and spools off, or resin drained and the vat cleaned. Then immobilize everything that moves: zip-tie the toolhead and gantry, lower the heatbed onto its foam or shipping screws, fit lead-screw protectors. Remove and separately wrap the screen, spool holder, AMS, glass, vat, and build plate. Can I ship resin, IPA or cleaning solvent with the printer?

No. Isopropyl alcohol, uncured resin, and solvents are regulated hazardous materials with their own packaging, labeling, and transport rules, and some cannot travel by air at all. Drain and clean everything before packing, and leave the chemicals at home. We stock what a repair needs at this end.

How much does a 3D printer repair cost, and how long does it take?

Repairs are quoted per job after diagnosis, because the same error code can mean a five-minute cold pull or a board replacement. Basic troubleshooting by email or text is free. For ship-in work you get a written quote and a timeline before any paid work starts, and nothing is spent without your approval. We aim to respond to every request the same day.

Is it worth shipping a cheap 3D printer across the country to be repaired?

Often not, and we will tell you before you buy a label. Round-trip freight plus parts on an entry-level machine can approach the cost of replacing it. Shipping tends to make sense for enclosed or large-format machines, resin printers with screen or light-engine faults, board-level faults, print farms sending several units at once, and any printer that earns money while it runs. Ask first — that conversation costs nothing.

Do you work on printers you did not sell, and can I supply my own parts?

Yes to both. We sell no printers at all, so every machine that reaches us is one we did not sell. We work on Bambu Lab, Creality, Prusa, Elegoo, Anycubic, and most other consumer and prosumer FDM and resin machines. Customer-supplied parts are fine, and we will tell you before starting if we think the part you bought is not the fault.

What about 3D printers outside the United States?

Virtual sessions work anywhere there is a camera and a connection. Physical ship-in repair from outside the US is a case-by-case conversation, because customs and return freight usually change the economics enough that a local technician is the better answer. Ask us and we will give you a straight read rather than taking the job for its own sake.
