Two resins. One very different
post-processing experience.

If you've spent any time in the resin printing world, you already know the post-processing dance: nitrile gloves, a jug of IPA, careful washing, and a UV cure station. It works — but it's not exactly frictionless. Water washable resin arrived as a direct answer to that friction, promising cleanup with nothing but tap water.

The tradeoff? Chemistry. The same hydrophilic components that let water dissolve uncured resin also alter the mechanical properties of the cured print. Understanding exactly what you gain and lose with each choice is how you match material to project — instead of discovering the hard way that your miniature's sword snapped on the first game night.

Why they're different
at the molecular level

Both resin types are UV photopolymers — liquid monomers and oligomers that cross-link into a solid when exposed to UV light. The critical difference is what happens to the uncured material during post-processing.

Standard resin uses hydrophobic (water-repelling) oligomers. Uncured resin bonds to itself and to surfaces strongly, requiring a polar organic solvent like IPA to break it loose. The resulting cross-linked structure after curing is dense and mechanically robust.

Water washable resin incorporates water-soluble or hydrophilic monomers into its formulation. These components allow plain water to emulsify and carry away uncured resin. The convenience is real — but those hydrophilic components also reduce the cross-link density of the final cured part, which directly affects strength.

Think of it this way: the ingredient that makes water washable resin easy to clean is the same ingredient that makes it slightly weaker. It's not a flaw in the design — it's an inherent tradeoff in the chemistry.

Brittleness: The honest answer

Water washable resin is more brittle than standard resin. This is the most widely reported difference in the community and the one most likely to affect your project. The reduced cross-link density that results from hydrophilic additives means cured parts have lower tensile strength and less elongation at break — both of which contribute to a higher likelihood of snapping under stress.

The brittleness shows up most aggressively in thin, high-stress geometries: miniature weapons, fine lattice structures, small clips, and any part that will be handled repeatedly. One user's common experience: more cracks and splits specifically in thin parts like miniature swords and axes — exactly the areas where water washable resin's reduced toughness has room to show itself.

Standard resin is also brittle by thermoplastic standards — don't confuse "more brittle" with "fragile vs. strong." Both resins will snap before bending significantly. The question is degree: water washable resin's threshold is just lower.

Important nuance: Over-exposure during printing or over-curing under UV will exacerbate brittleness in both resin types. Proper calibration of exposure settings matters as much as the resin choice itself. Closer than you think

This is where water washable resin surprises most newcomers. Both resins produce a high-quality, smooth surface finish with excellent detail reproduction. Multiple real-world comparisons — including with Elegoo's water washable 8K resin on the Saturn 4 Ultra — found no meaningful difference in surface quality or detail resolution between the two types.

The surface quality of a resin print is primarily determined by three factors: printer resolution (8K vs. 4K LCD), layer height, and calibration. Resin type plays a secondary role for surface finish specifically. In typical miniature printing, figurine work, or jewelry prototyping, you will struggle to identify which resin was used by looking at the final cured part.

The one area where standard resin maintains a documented edge is very fine tolerances and extremely complex geometries — the kind of precision engineering work where sub-micron surface quality matters. For hobby printing and most commercial applications, this distinction is academic.

Finishing tip for water washable resin: After the initial water wash, a final rinse with diluted ethanol or a quick wipe can improve surface clarity and remove any lingering hydrophilic residue. This is especially useful for clear water washable resin where haze may appear if water isn't fully evacuated before curing.

Effectively a tie for most use cases. Standard resin has a marginal technical edge in ultra-fine precision work. For decorative models, miniatures, cosplay props, and display pieces, both resins deliver comparable, excellent results — especially on modern 8K printers like the Saturn 4 Ultra.

The resin-to-project match matters more than most beginners expect. Here's how to think through the choice:

bridging the gap

The brittleness limitation of water washable resin hasn't gone unnoticed by manufacturers. A category of water washable tough resin has emerged specifically to address it. Products like Anycubic Water-Wash Resin+ and Phrozen's water washable formulations engineer higher elongation at break into the hydrophilic formula — delivering up to twice the toughness of standard water washable resin.

These tough variants expand water washable resin's use into larger models, frequently-handled figurines, and board game pieces. They still require careful drying before UV cure, and they don't yet match the mechanical properties of the best standard ABS-like resins — but they substantially close the gap for moderate-stress applications.

If you're committed to water-based cleanup but need more durability, water washable tough resin is the right direction to look. Just verify the specific brand's tensile and elongation specs before committing to a high-volume run.

Water washable doesn't mean
drain-safe

This is the most dangerous misconception in the water washable resin world. Wash water contaminated with uncured resin is still hazardous — to aquatic life, to the sewage system, and potentially to humans downstream.

Correct disposal: Pour used wash water into a clear container and expose it to direct sunlight or a UV curing station until all resin particles have solidified. The cured resin particles can then be removed and the water — now free of uncured photopolymer — can be discarded responsibly. Never pour uncured resin wash water directly down a drain.

The same logic applies to your IPA from standard resin washing. Both types require responsible handling. Water washable resin removes the chemical hazard of IPA itself, but not the photopolymer hazard of uncured resin.

Ventilation is still recommended for water washable resin during printing, even though the odor is significantly reduced. Liquid resin — regardless of type — remains a skin and eye irritant. Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses when handling uncured resin in any form.
