Turning a non-laser H2D into a laser machine, honestly
Bambu Lab's laser upgrade kit is real, it ships, and it converts a plain H2D into the laser version. Here's what's in the box, what the install actually asks of you, and the one step that makes the job hard to undo.

The short version
Yes, you can retrofit a non-laser H2D. Bambu Lab sells the parts two ways: a Laser Upgrade Kit (all the enclosure and support hardware) and a Laser Module (the 10 W or 40 W head itself). If your machine did not ship as a laser version, you need both — the module alone will not work on a stock H2D.
Bambu Lab's position is that a machine upgraded this way delivers the same functions and performance as a factory Laser Edition. The company also says plainly that the install is more involved than its other accessories, and the wiki opens with a page of electrical-safety warnings before it gets to step one.
The honest summary from our bench: this is a good buy if you already own the printer and genuinely want laser work. It is a poor buy if you're still shopping, because bundling the laser at purchase usually costs less than the retrofit path.
What you're actually buying
The product page splits into options that trip people up constantly, so it's worth being precise. Bambu Lab's own purchase notice states that the laser module is only compatible with the laser version of the machine — which means if you're upgrading a stock H2D, selecting "laser module only" leaves you with a head and nowhere to put it.
What a non-laser H2D owner needs. Enclosure glass, ventilation, air assist, camera, safety hardware, plus the laser head.
Everything except the head. Sensible if you're buying the module separately or waiting on a deal.
For machines that already shipped laser-ready. Not a path for a stock H2D on its own.
Vendor-stated: 10Â W engraves and lightly cuts (about 5Â mm basswood); 40Â W cuts roughly 15Â mm in a pass.
The power choice matters more than the price gap suggests. Bambu Lab publishes a maximum engraving speed of 400 mm/s for the 10 W and 1,000 mm/s for the 40 W, with engraving areas of 310 × 270 mm and 310 × 250 mm respectively. Both use a 455 nm blue diode; a separate 850 nm infrared laser handles contact-less height measurement so the machine can follow a curved surface.
Our rule of thumb after handling both: if cutting is the job, the 40Â W is not a luxury. If you want to mark, label and decorate parts you've already printed, the 10Â W is plenty and generates less mess. What ships in the box
The kit is less "a laser" and more "a conversion of the enclosure." Grouped by what each part is for:

One difference from the factory laser machine
Bambu Lab's own FAQ flags this: the air pump in the upgrade kit is external. Machines that shipped as a Laser Full Combo have the pump built into the back of the printer. The retrofit pump lives outside the machine and connects by tube. Functionally equivalent, but it's another object on your bench and another cable to route — worth knowing before you clear a space.
The install, stage by stage
This sequence follows Bambu Lab's published upgrade guide. It's summarised here so you know what you're signing up for — do the job from the official wiki and the accompanying video, not from a blog post. That includes ours.
Power down completely
Switch off and unplug. The wiki is emphatic about this and it isn't boilerplate — the job exposes toolhead wiring, and a short here is an expensive mistake rather than an annoying one.
Swap the front door glass
Four screws at the hinge, top and bottom. Support the glass as the last screw comes out or it drops. The laser-safety window goes back in the same mounting points, screws snug and no tighter, then open and close it to check the fit.
Remove the top cover and both side panes
Two screws from inside the chamber hold the top of each side glass; the rest is retained by clips. Push each pane out of the chamber and lift it free, gripping firmly. Set the originals somewhere safe and padded.
Cover the clip positions with the supplied stickers
Clean the area first so the adhesive takes. Bambu Lab documents two different H2D side-panel versions here with different sticker counts and positions — check which one you have against the guide rather than assuming.
Bond the new safety windows in
Peel the film, peel the tape backing, align the bottom clips with the notches, seat the glass, then press firmly along the top and sides to bond it. Brace from outside while you replace the two top screws from within the chamber. This is the step to slow down on.
Fit the exhaust
The ventilation adapter screws over the chamber exhaust fan at the back. Clamp the 100Â mm pipe over it, tighten, then tug hard to confirm it's captive. Route the other end outdoors, or into a purifier if you're running one.
Add the camera, e-stop and air pump
The BirdsEye camera mounts above the front door frame. For the e-stop, the safety key comes out of the rear panel and the e-stop cable goes in — both plug and key are orientation-specific. Keep the original rear-panel key somewhere you'll find it again.
Build the platform and calibrate
Slats click into the platform, normally one every four slots with the points up. Seat the platform against the heatbed stoppers. Then run the module's first-time setup calibration from the screen, with the bed clear of anything covering the calibration marks, and pull the focal-length card out afterwards.
Three things that surprise people
The side windows are a one-way door
The front pane is screwed and reversible. The side panes are not: they bond in on double-sided adhesive. Once those windows are seated, going back to your original glass is not a five-minute reversal. If any part of you is on the fence, be on the fence before stage five, not during it.
"Under an hour" is a shop's marketing copy, not a spec
Several retail listings describe the conversion as an under-an-hour job with no advanced tools. That figure comes from reseller product pages, not from Bambu Lab, and it doesn't match the shape of the work. Bambu Lab's own framing is the opposite: it calls the install relatively complex and asks you to watch the video before buying. Budget an afternoon, work when you're unhurried, and don't schedule a print for the same day.
The camera and the cutting kit are entangled
Bambu Lab notes that on the H2D, the BirdsEye camera needs the laser module present in order to calibrate. So if you buy the cutting upgrade kit on its own, the camera can't do photo capture for it — the company says support for calibrating without the module is planned in a future firmware release. Worth checking the current state before you plan a cutting-only setup.
Safety, stated plainly
The module is a Class 4 laser. The assembled machine is rated Class 1 only because the enclosure and its safety glazing contain the beam — which means the rating depends on you finishing the install correctly and running with everything closed.
Bambu Lab advises strongly against leaving the machine unattended during laser operation and against having flammable material nearby. The chamber has a flame sensor that alerts through the app and a buzzer, but a sensor is a backstop, not a substitute for being in the room. Ventilate before you cut, every time.
Does the math actually work?
This is where we tend to disagree with the enthusiasm on product pages, and it's the same conclusion we reached in our laser-or-no-laser buying guide — just arrived at from the other side.
If you are shopping, buy the configuration you want. Kit plus module plus your afternoon plus install risk generally lands above the price difference you'd have paid to have the laser fitted at the factory. That's the whole argument for bundling.
If you already own a non-laser H2D, that comparison is gone. The relevant question is no longer "kit versus bundle" but "kit versus a separate standalone laser, or versus not doing laser work at all." On those terms the kit does well: it uses a machine you own, a footprint you've already given up, and an enclosure and camera system that a cheap open-frame diode laser can't match. Some pricing context, captured on 7 August 2026 and guaranteed to be stale eventually. Bambu Lab's US store listed the H2D Laser Upgrade Kit / Laser Module line starting from $349, with the exact number depending on which option and power you choose. Micro Center listed the kit without the module at $459.99, in-store pickup only. Bambu Lab discounts this SKU heavily and often, sometimes bundling it with the cutting kit, so the number you see today is the only one that counts. Check before you buy; don't plan around a figure in a blog post.
A San Diego wrinkle
Micro Center listed the kit as in-store pickup only, and there is no Micro Center in San Diego County — the nearest is Tustin, roughly 75 to 90 minutes up the 5 depending on when you leave. For most people here that makes ordering direct from Bambu Lab the practical route, even when a retail price looks close. Factor the drive, or don't factor the store.
After the install: the part nobody photographs
Laser work is dirty in a way printing is not. Cutting and engraving throw smoke, resin vapour from plywood glue, and fine particulate into a chamber that also contains your motion system, your lead screws and your optics. Owners running the factory laser version report that the machine starts asking for cleaning quickly — in some cases after only a few hours of laser time — and that the interior gets visibly grimy fast.
Whether that dirt eventually costs print quality on the FDM side is, as far as we can tell, still an open question that owners themselves are asking rather than one anybody has answered with data. We're not going to pretend otherwise. What we can say from the bench is that machines doing both jobs need a maintenance cadence closer to a shop tool than a desk appliance. Practical habits that help: run the exhaust for a minute after a job finishes, brush the platform and slats between sessions, wipe the safety glazing rather than letting film build on it, and keep the optics on a schedule instead of a vibe. Ventilation, specifically here
Bambu Lab's guidance is to route the exhaust outdoors and to confirm that doing so complies with local rules first. In San Diego that usually means a window or garage door, which raises two local realities. In summer, opening a garage in an inland valley to vent a laser is a straightforward way to make a hot workspace hotter, and it undermines a chamber the H2D works to keep stable. Near the coast, the marine layer means humid air coming in — not a laser problem, but a filament problem, and a reason to keep spools sealed rather than parked next to an open door.
Running a purifier instead of ducting outdoors is the tidier answer for apartments and shared spaces, at the cost of another appliance, filter replacements and more draw on a SDG&E bill that already punishes a workshop.
Should you do this yourself?
You've done fiddly panel work before, you can commit an unhurried afternoon, and adhesive that only goes on once doesn't make you nervous.
You have jobs waiting — signage, part marking, enclosure panels — not a vague sense that it would be nice to own a laser.
If the H2D is running production, weigh the downtime and the risk of a machine that needs sorting out mid-week.
No route outside and no purifier budget means the answer is "not yet," regardless of how good the kit is.

Questions we get asked
Can any non-laser H2D be upgraded, or only recent ones?
Bambu Lab publishes the upgrade path for the non-laser H2D generally rather than for a specific production window. The guide does document two different side-panel versions with different sticker steps, so identify which variant you have before you start. If your machine is unusual or you're unsure, ask Bambu Lab support with your serial rather than guessing.
Do I need the upgrade kit and the laser module, or just one?
Both, if your machine did not ship as a laser version. Bambu Lab's purchase notice states the module alone is only compatible with laser-version machines. The kit supplies the safety glazing, ventilation, air assist, camera and e-stop hardware that a stock H2D doesn't have.
Is the install reversible?
Partly. The front door pane is screwed in and can be swapped back. The left and right safety windows bond in on double-sided adhesive, so returning to the original side glass is not a simple reversal. Treat stage five as the point of commitment.
How long does it take?
Bambu Lab does not publish an install time; some retail listings claim under an hour, but that's reseller copy rather than a manufacturer figure. Bambu Lab describes the process as relatively complex and recommends watching the video first. Plan for an unhurried afternoon and don't book the machine for anything that day.
Does the upgraded machine perform like a factory Laser Edition?
Bambu Lab states that an H2D upgraded through the kit retains the same functions and performance as the Laser Edition. The one structural difference the company itself calls out is the air pump: the kit's pump mounts externally and connects by tube, where the factory laser machine has it built in.
10Â W or 40Â W?
Vendor-stated figures: the 10Â W engraves up to 400Â mm/s and lightly cuts to about 5Â mm basswood; the 40Â W reaches 1,000Â mm/s and around 15Â mm in a single pass. If cutting is the point, take the 40Â W. If you're marking and decorating printed parts, the 10Â W is the calmer, cleaner choice.
How much extra cleaning does laser work add?
More than most people expect. Owners running the laser version report the machine prompting for cleaning after relatively short periods of laser use and the interior getting dirty quickly. Whether that eventually affects FDM print quality is still an open question rather than a settled one. Plan on a shop-tool maintenance cadence rather than an appliance one.
