The HeyGears G1X Wants to Put Full‑Color 3D Printing on Your Desk. Here’s the Whole Map It Lands On.
A $3,599 Kickstarter machine is promising something the desktop world has chased for a decade: finished, photorealistic color straight off the build plate — no filament swapping, no painting. Before anyone backs it, it’s worth knowing every other road to color, why most of them stall, and what the community is actually asking.
What the G1X Actually Is (and Isn’t)
The G1X, which HeyGears launched on Kickstarter on July 23, is not an FDM printer with a color gadget bolted on, and it’s not a resin printer in the MSLA sense that most hobbyists know. It’s a desktop take on material jetting — the same family of technology behind six-figure industrial machines. An inkjet printhead fires microscopic droplets of UV-curable photopolymer ink, a UV source cures each pass, and the object rises layer by layer with color placed voxel by voxel rather than spool by spool.
The numbers HeyGears is quoting are inkjet numbers, not extruder numbers: an industrial Epson i3200 printhead with 3,200 nozzles and eight ink channels — CMYK plus double white, support, and transparent, per the company’s campaign materials — firing 3.9-picoliter droplets at up to 1440 × 2400 DPI, with a claimed palette of more than 10 million colors and the ability to mix transparent and colored material in a single print. New Atlas reports a quoted layer thickness of 10–20 microns. Supports are water-soluble: drop the finished part in water and they dissolve, which matters enormously for the fine, fragile geometry this kind of process invites.
One machine, three jobs. Beyond full-color 3D printing, the same hardware does raised 3D-texture printing — relief detail built up on flat surfaces to mimic leather grain, carved wood, or brush strokes — and conventional 2D UV printing on what HeyGears says are more than 400 base materials, from wood and metal to glass and canvas, with a rotary attachment for tumblers. Trade outlet 3D Printing Industry called that 400+ substrate figure “ambitious,” and that’s the right posture: it’s a claim to verify, not a spec to bank on.

There are two tiers, and the split is real hardware, not firmware. The $1,999 G1 Starter carries a six-channel Epson F1080 head at 720 × 900 DPI and handles texture and 2D UV work; the G1X tier carries the eight-channel i3200 and adds true full-color 3D printing, with a middle $3,299 G1X Starter that coverage from Hackster describes as upgradeable to full-color later. Why the spec drift matters. Independent coverage has flagged that HeyGears’ own materials disagree with each other on Z height and texture height, that early pricing shifted about $300 above what deposit-holders were quoted, and that layer-thickness figures vary by outlet. None of that is disqualifying for a pre-production campaign — but it means every number above is a target, not a measurement. The measurements arrive when production units reach independent reviewers.
Every Road to Color, and Where Each One Stalls
“Color 3D printing” means five very different technologies, and the arguments people have about them online usually come from comparing across categories without saying so. Here’s the whole map — because the G1X only makes sense in context.
1. Filament-swap FDM — the multicolor most people own
Bambu’s AMS, Creality’s CFS, Anycubic’s ACE Pro, Elegoo’s Canvas, Prusa’s MMU: one nozzle, several spools, and a purge cycle every time the color changes. It produces a handful of discrete, solid colors — not gradients, not photo textures — and the purge cost is the community’s longest-running complaint. Spend an evening in the printer forums and the same themes repeat: waste towers and purge piles that can outweigh the model on color-heavy jobs, flush-volume tuning that stains one color into the next when it’s wrong, and multi-thousand-dollar dual-nozzle machines still tripping over their own purge towers. 2. Dual nozzle and toolchangers — less purge, same ceiling
Machines like the Bambu X2D cut the waste problem with a second full hotend, and toolchangers scale that further. The economics improve; the color model doesn’t. You still get zones of solid filament color with hard transitions.
3. Inkjet-tinted FDM — the cautionary tale
This has been tried at this exact price point before. XYZprinting’s da Vinci Color launched in 2017 at $3,000, spraying CMYK ink onto special color-absorbing PLA mid-extrusion, with a claimed 16 million colors — and its own “world’s first full-color desktop 3D printer” headline. In practice it carried FDM layer lines into every print, tied owners to proprietary $35 spools and $65 ink, and the company ultimately exited the consumer market; new-old-stock units now surface at deep clearance prices. The lesson isn’t that desktop color is impossible. It’s that color on top of a filament process inherits every limitation of the filament process.
4. Powder binder jetting — where full color started
ZCorp machines — later 3D Systems’ ProJet 660 line — printed color binder into gypsum powder two decades ago. Full palette, genuinely. But parts were fragile and needed infiltration, and competitors like Mimaki have argued the colors read washed-out because light scatters through whitish material just under the surface. It stayed industrial, and it faded.
5. Industrial material jetting — the thing the G1X is shrinking
This is the reference class. Stratasys’ PolyJet J55 jets five materials simultaneously for what the company says is nearly 500,000 PANTONE-validated colors at 18-micron layers — an office machine priced like a car. Mimaki’s 3DUJ line claims the same 10-million-color territory HeyGears now quotes, uses the same water-soluble support trick, and its “compact” 3DUJ-2207 still lands around the cost of a decent used truck. Every review of these machines says some version of the same sentence: the parts look injection-molded and painted, straight off the plate. That sentence is the entire reason the G1X exists. Enthusiast coverage has framed the G1X bluntly as the closest mental model yet to “a desktop J55” — while being careful, as we are, not to claim it matches one.
6. Print gray, paint great — today’s actual best value
The route working right now, in our shop and thousands of others: print in resin at 16K-class detail, then prime and paint. What the Community Is Actually Asking
The launch coverage is glowing; a New Atlas–cited prototype review found impressively detailed parts straight off the machine, and the campaign passed roughly $10 million in backing within its first days. The forum-and-comment conversation around it — synthesized here without pointing at anyone in particular — is more specific, and it clusters into six questions worth carrying into any pledge decision:
- Is the printhead a part or a subscription? Piezo inkjet heads are wear items. HeyGears’ own rated-life figures — one to two years on the i3200 — are honest, but replacement pricing hasn’t been published, and an unpriced consumable at the heart of a machine is the single biggest open economic question.
- What happens when it sits idle? Anyone who has owned a 2D inkjet knows the failure mode: clogs. HeyGears counters with claimed automatic cleaning after about three days of inactivity, standby nozzle moisturizing, and white-ink circulation. Those are the right features on paper; whether they hold up in a garage that goes quiet for a month is exactly the kind of thing only long-term owners can answer.
- What do prints cost? The company advertises an open ink system with refillable tanks, which is encouraging, but per-model ink and support consumption hasn’t been independently measured. Material jetting builds the entire object out of ink.
- Are the parts usable or just beautiful? Jetted photopolymers across the industry skew brittle and UV-sensitive relative to engineering filaments. Expect display, prototype, and collectible territory — the same lane as PolyJet — not brackets and tool mounts.
- Is “world’s first” real? It comes with asterisks. The da Vinci Color claimed a version of that title in 2017 with a different process; Mimaki and Stratasys have long done it at industrial scale; Flashforge has a competing desktop full-color machine, the CJ270, publicly in development. “First desktop full-color 3D and UV printer to ship” may end up accurate — December will tell.
- Is HeyGears good for it? This is the strongest part of the story. HeyGears isn’t a napkin-sketch startup: it’s an established resin-printer maker with a dental-manufacturing pedigree, a shipping UltraCraft Reflex line, and a US retail presence. Crowdfunding risk still applies — dates slip, specs shift, and a pledge is not a purchase — but the execution track record is real.
The San Diego Read: Who Should Care, Who Should Wait
Etsy sellers and customization shops are the clearest fit — the 2D UV and texture modes earn revenue on day one on phone cases, tumblers, and signage, with full-color 3D as the headline act. Miniature and figure people should watch third-party color-accuracy and skin-tone results before pledging; painted resin remains the quality bar to beat. Functional-parts people can skip this generation entirely — it’s not for you, and that’s fine.
Two local notes worth more than they look. Second, if you run inks in a coastal garage, the marine layer is real — sealed storage and the machine’s maintenance cycles stop being optional.
And a repair-bench observation: machines like this bring 2D-printer failure modes — head clogs, capping-station gunk, ink starvation — into 3D printer territory. That’s a maintenance culture most FDM and resin owners haven’t needed yet. It’s coming with this category, whoever ships it.
