Resin leaked into your Saturn 4 Ultra and now nothing cures
The print runs its full time. The plate comes up empty. Before you buy a screen, find out which of six layers actually stopped the light.
There is a specific kind of quiet that follows a resin leak. The machine sounds completely normal. The tilt mechanism cycles, the Z axis climbs, the timer counts down, and at the end of a four-hour job the build plate lifts out of the vat with nothing on it at all. Sometimes there is a soft grey smear that wipes off with a paper towel. Usually there is nothing.
That combination — a leak, then prints that stop forming — is not one failure. It is a family of failures that all produce the same symptom, and they cost wildly different amounts to fix. One of them is twenty minutes with a bottle of isopropyl alcohol. One of them is a screen replacement and a two-hour teardown. One of them means the machine needs somebody with a multimeter, not a scraper.
The point of this guide is to keep you from buying the wrong part. Work the order below and you will know which layer failed before you spend anything.
Do these four things before anything else
- Power off at the switch and unplug the machine. Cancelling the print is not the same thing. Liquid resin that has found its way below the screen plane is sitting on or near live electronics.
- Do not run the exposure test yet. If there is still liquid resin on the screen, lighting it up welds the problem in place. You will convert a wipe-off job into a scrape job in about three seconds.
- Cover the screen. Daylight cures resin. A towel over the open machine buys you time while you set up.
- Photograph everything before you clean it. If you end up opening a support ticket, those photos are your case.
Why a leak makes prints stop forming
A masked stereolithography printer is a light path with a stencil in it. Light leaves the board at the bottom, gets straightened, passes through a panel that blocks it everywhere except the shape of the current layer, crosses a sheet of glass and a sheet of film, and lands in the resin. Interrupt that path anywhere and the resin never receives enough energy to polymerise. The motion system carries on regardless, which is why the machine seems fine while producing nothing.
Here is what light actually crosses on a Saturn 4 Ultra, and the layers a leak can reach:
The failure mode that catches people out is the sealing tape at the screen edge. It is a seam, not a gasket. Resin that pools around the vat perimeter wicks into that seam by capillary action, travels sideways under the tape, and ends up between the glass and the panel where no amount of surface cleaning will reach it. The machine still lights up. It just lights up through a stain.
The first hour
Order matters more than speed here. Uncured resin is recoverable. Cured resin, in most of these locations, is not.
- Kill the power. Switch off, then pull the plug from the wall. Worth repeating because it is the step people skip when they are in a hurry to see the damage.
- Glove up and ventilate. Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a door or window open. Uncured resin is a skin and eye irritant and a sensitiser — the reaction tends to arrive after repeated casual exposure, not the first time. If you print in a closed garage, do not also fill it with isopropyl vapour.
- Lift the vat straight up and out. Straight up. Dragging it toward you scrapes the sealing tape at the screen edge, which is exactly the barrier you are trying to preserve. Set it in a tray, not on the bench.
- Read the spill before you touch it. Where did it pool? A puddle sitting on the glass is one problem. A wet line running under the tape at the screen perimeter is a different and worse one. Resin below the screen plane is a third.
- Lift the liquid, do not smear it. Dry paper towels first, pressed and lifted rather than wiped. Smearing spreads a thin film over a wider area, and thin films cure faster than puddles.
- Then isopropyl, on the cloth, never in the machine. Dampen a lint-free cloth with 90%+ IPA and work in from the edges. Do not pour, spray, or flood. Liquid running toward the screen perimeter is how a surface spill becomes an under-glass spill.
- Check below the screen plane. With the vat out, look into the chassis around and beneath the screen assembly — the tilt linkage, the light board area, the floor of the case. A torch helps. Resin down there changes what kind of job this is.
- Let it dry fully, still powered off. IPA needs to flash off before anything gets energised. Give it longer than you think, especially on a damp marine-layer morning when nothing in a San Diego garage dries quickly.
on disposal
Resin-soaked towels, gloves, contaminated IPA and drained resin are hazardous waste. They do not belong in household rubbish and never go down a drain. The County of San Diego runs household hazardous waste collection for residents — check their current locations and hours before you drive anywhere, since both change. Fully cured resin waste is treated differently from liquid, so cure what you can before disposal and follow whatever the current county guidance says for the rest.
The test that tells you which layer failed
Once the machine is clean and dry, one test separates most of these causes. It costs nothing and takes two minutes.
Remove the vat and the build plate. Lay a single sheet of plain white paper flat on the screen. Power up and run the screen exposure test — on current firmware it sits under the Tools menu, though naming and placement have shifted between firmware versions, so look for a screen or exposure self-test if it is not where you expect. Wear eye protection and do not stare into it.
The paper is the diagnostic. It diffuses the output so you can actually see the shape of what is arriving, which you cannot do looking at bare glass. Then read it against this table.

If the paper looks perfect, put the vat back in — empty — and hold it up to a bright light first. A release film with a cured slab welded to it, or one that has gone milky, blocks a surprising amount of light on its way through. Cleaning cured resin off the screen, honestly
There is a lot of confident advice online about this. Most of it understates how easily you make things worse.
What works, sometimes: fold a cloth, wet it with 90%+ IPA, lay it flat over the cured area and leave it for five to ten minutes. The alcohol softens the interface at the edges. Lift, check, repeat. Patience beats pressure every time here, and three gentle soaks beat one aggressive one.
If a film has genuinely bonded, a plastic razor or a wooden stick held at a very shallow angle, worked in from one edge, will sometimes lift it as a sheet. Never metal. Never perpendicular. Stop the instant you feel it grab rather than slide.
What does not work: scrubbing. The 9H tempered glass over the panel resists scratching well, but the sealing tape around the perimeter does not resist anything. Lift or tear that tape and you have opened a permanent channel for the next leak, which will go straight under the glass. If the cured resin has bonded into the tape seam rather than sitting on open glass, you are already past the point where cleaning helps.
And the hard rule: if the exposure test still shows the same blotch after two proper soak-and-lift cycles, the resin is not on top of the glass. It is underneath it. Nothing you do from the outside will reach it.
Stop and hand it off if any of these are true
- You found resin below the screen plane — on the chassis floor, in the tilt linkage, near the light board, or anywhere on a circuit board.
- The exposure test shows no light at all.
- The sealing tape at the screen perimeter is lifted, torn, or curling.
- You have cleaned twice and the same blotch is still there.
- You are not confident stripping the machine down to a bare chassis and back up again.
Powering a machine on to "just see if it still works" after resin has reached a board is how a screen bill becomes a mainboard bill.
The warranty situation, which is worth knowing before you call
This part is unusually clear-cut, and it is better to know it now than after a phone call.
ELEGOO's published warranty terms give the machine twelve months. The LCD screen is treated as a consumable with a three-month limited warranty, and the exclusions are named explicitly: their warranty page lists "resin leakage, scratch-resistant film damage, man-made damage, and collision damage" as not covered. Release film and tools carry no warranty at all. The resin tank and build plate get six months. Separately, the general forfeiture clause names damage from external factors and misuse — resin leakage among them — and also excludes products that a third party has repaired or an individual has modified.
Read together, that means a leak-damaged screen is very unlikely to be a free replacement, and it means opening the machine yourself, or having someone who is not ELEGOO open it, has its own cost in whatever warranty remains. ELEGOO's own returns guidance asks customers not to attempt repairs without their direction. These terms were current at the time of writing; check the page before you rely on them.
None of that is a reason to skip the support ticket. Opening one is free, it establishes a record, their after-sales channel sells the parts, and their published policy does provide for out-of-warranty repair with the customer covering the cost. Send the photos you took before you cleaned. Include your order number, the machine's serial, and a plain description of what you have already tried — a ticket that shows you ran the exposure test and describes what the paper looked like gets a faster and more useful answer than one that says the printer stopped working.
If it is the screen
The part is not the expensive bit. ELEGOO's US store lists the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K panel at $129.99 at the time of writing, with a separate listing for the 12K Saturn 4 and Saturn 4 Ultra panel; prices and stock move, so treat that as a starting point rather than a quote. PFA film for the Saturn 4 family runs roughly $30 for five sheets or $60 for ten on the same store.
The labour is the expensive bit. When the team at Fabbaloo ran a Saturn 4 Ultra through a hands-on review, a mid-print film puncture let resin in between the film and the top of the LCD glass, and they photographed damage to the light engine afterward. Their calibration prints came out inconsistent at identical exposure times, an exposure test showed the screen lighting unevenly, and ELEGOO support diagnosed a damaged panel and shipped a replacement. Notably, they were careful to say they could not be certain the puncture caused the panel damage — worth preserving, because it is the kind of uncertainty that usually gets flattened in the retelling.
The swap itself took them around two hours and required removing the front and rear panels, both side covers and the entire bottom of the machine, then extracting the Fresnel lens before the old panel could be pressed out. The panel is held in with double-sided tape that has to be removed and replaced with fresh strips from the kit, and new protective strips go along the seam between the panel and the chassis. Their assessment was that this is not a job for someone without prior machine-repair experience. That is one documented account on one review unit rather than a controlled study, but it matches what a full teardown of this machine involves.
If that description sounds fine to you, order the part and set aside an afternoon. If it does not, that is a completely reasonable place to draw the line.
Getting back to printing
While parts are in transit, the San Diego Public Library IDEA Labs run free maker access at several branches, which is worth knowing about if you have a deadline and a dead machine. Making sure it does not happen again
Almost every leak traces back to a film that was already telling you something.
- Fit a sacrificial screen protector. A replaceable film over the glass takes the damage instead of the panel. It is the single highest-value thing on this list relative to cost.
- Use the drip tray. The Saturn 4 Ultra ships with a thin plastic tray that fits around the vat and catches drips during plate removal. It is easy to leave in the box. Do not.
- Backlight the film before every session. Hold the vat at an angle against a light and look for cloudiness, deformation, and pinholes. If you suspect a hole, pour IPA in the vat and set it on a paper towel — a wet towel means a hole, and a holed film means the next print puts resin on your screen.
- Never start a print after a failure without a full reset. Drain, filter through a mesh strainer to catch cured fragments, inspect the film for drag damage, wipe the vat, confirm the screen is clean. - Clean the vat perimeter, not just the vat. Resin that accumulates on the outside walls of the tank and around the vat bay is the origin point for most seam leaks.
- Watch the temperature, which in San Diego means watching the time of day. A coastal garage on a marine-layer morning sits well below the 20–35°C range these machines want. Cold resin is thicker, flows back under large cross-sections more slowly, and peels harder — and peel force is what punctures film. Printing in the warmer part of the day, or warming the room first, genuinely reduces film stress. Inland, the opposite problem shows up in summer.

Common questions
My Saturn 4 Ultra leaked resin and now nothing cures. Is the screen dead?
Not necessarily, and it is worth finding out before spending anything. Clean the machine, let it dry, then run the screen exposure test with a sheet of white paper laid on the screen. An even full-field glow means the panel and light board are both fine and your blockage is above the glass — usually a fogged or resin-welded release film, or a vat that is not seating flat. Blotches, hard-edged bands or no light at all point to the panel or the light board instead.
Can I run the exposure test right after a leak to check the screen?
No. Clean first, test second. If there is still liquid resin sitting on the screen, running the exposure test cures it in place and turns a wipe-off job into a scraping job with a real chance of damaging the sealing tape. Power the machine off, remove the vat, lift and clean the liquid resin, let everything dry completely, and only then power up to test.
Does ELEGOO's warranty cover a resin leak?
Based on their published warranty terms, generally no. The LCD screen is listed as a consumable with a three-month limited warranty, and resin leakage is named among the exclusions alongside scratch-resistant film damage, human-caused damage and collision damage. The broader forfeiture clause also covers damage from misuse including resin leakage, and excludes machines repaired by a third party or modified by the owner. Resin got below the screen, into the body of the printer. Is the machine finished?
Not automatically, but stop working on it and stop powering it on. Uncured resin does not evaporate, it creeps along cables and it collects dust, so it stays a problem until it is physically removed. The risk is that repeated power-ups turn a screen-level fault into a light board or mainboard fault. Leave it unplugged, photograph what you can see, and get it in front of someone who is comfortable working around the electronics before it gets energised again.
How do I tell whether the problem is the screen or the release film?
Test them separately. Run the exposure test with the vat removed entirely — that isolates the light board, panel and glass. If the paper shows an even glow with the vat out, those three layers are fine and the film or the vat is your problem. Then inspect the film on its own by holding the vat up against a bright light, looking for cloudiness, pinholes and any cured resin welded to the surface. Both tests are quick and doing them in that order stops you guessing.
Can I keep printing while I wait for a replacement part?
Not on a machine with resin inside it or a compromised screen seal — you risk turning a repairable fault into a total loss.
