Formlabs Form Studio 1 Review: The $699 Resin Printer vs. the Best of 2026
Formlabs just put its pro resin workflow on a hobbyist's desk. Here's what you get, what you give up, and how it stacks up against Elegoo, Anycubic, Phrozen and HeyGears.
If you've ever spilled a vat of resin, scrubbed a build plate in a garage that smelled like a nail salon, or sworn off resin printing because of the gloves-and-goggles routine, the Formlabs Form Studio 1 is aimed squarely at you. Formlabs announced it on October 14, 2026, starting at $699, with orders open now and shipping from November 16 (Formlabs).
That price matters. The company's flagship Form 4 starts at $2,625, nearly four times more. Formlabs is now stepping into the same price band as Elegoo, Anycubic and Phrozen, so the real question is simple: is a Formlabs ecosystem worth more than a cheaper 16K machine? At Dreaming3D, where we repair resin printers across San Diego County, that's the question we get asked most.
*With Alpha Resins and the Formlabs VOC Extractor.
Form Studio 1 specs and features
The Form Studio 1 is a masked SLA (MSLA/LCD) printer built on the same Low Force Display engine as the Form 4, scaled down in power but not in workflow. Its build volume is actually a touch larger than the Form 4's (All3DP).
| Technology | MSLA (Low Force Display) |
| Build volume | 200 × 125 × 235 mm (5.9 L) |
| XY pixel size | 35 µm, with anti-aliasing |
| Layer heights | 25–250 µm |
| Light source | 28 LEDs + plano-convex lens array, 6 mW/cm² |
| Speed | 40 mm/hr average, up to 130 mm/hr (Alpha Fast, 250 µm) |
| Resin heating | 25–45 °C, by material |
| Monitoring | 5 control systems + built-in camera |
| LCD (LPU) life | 750,000–1,500,000 layers |
| Tank life | 75,000+ layers (about 200 prints) |
| Printer size | 342 × 315 × 502 mm (75 cm tall with lid open) |
| Validated materials | 9 Formlabs resins at launch |
| Open Material Mode | Included, no fee (needs Resin Tank Pro) |
| Slicer | PreForm only |
| Warranty | 1 year |
What actually changes your day
- Glove-free resin handling. Sealed cartridges dispense automatically, and the printer checks that cartridge and tank materials match. Swapping colors means swapping a cartridge and its lidded tank, not pouring and filtering.
- Real speed. Formlabs says most prints finish in under two hours, and it printed a Raspberry Pi enclosure in 8 minutes in Alpha Fast.
- Better light, not just more pixels. Most budget printers use a single COB light with a Fresnel lens. The Studio 1's 28-LED collimated array hits the resin straight on, so detail stays consistent anywhere on the plate.
- Remote monitoring. Camera, time-lapses and job alerts run through Formlabs Dashboard and the new Form Mobile app.
- Build Platform Flex. Squeeze the plate and parts pop off, no scraper. It comes in higher bundles or costs $135 on its own.
Alpha Resins and safety
Formlabs launched six Alpha Resins with the printer: Grey, White, Black, Clear, Model and Fast, starting at $29 per liter. Formlabs says they're low-odor and skin-safe after proper post-processing per ISO 10993. Paired with the $179 VOC Extractor, it's the first resin setup with UL GREENGUARD Gold certification.
True Cast, Flexible 80A V2 and Tough 1500 V2 round out the nine validated materials. For everything else, Open Material Mode runs any 405 nm resin on the $79 Resin Tank Pro, which trades some speed for chemical resistance.
| Alpha resin | Layer | Speed | Price / L | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alpha Model | 50 µm | 15 mm/hr | $42 | Minis, busts, scale models |
| Alpha Grey / White / Black / Clear | 100 µm | 40 mm/hr | $36 | Prototypes, fit checks, jigs |
| Alpha Fast | 150–250 µm | 90–130 mm/hr | $29 | Rapid prototyping, fixtures |

Honest trade-offs
Early hands-on reviews are very positive, but the Studio 1 isn't a spec-sheet winner. It wins on workflow and gives up some things to get there. Note: FauxHammer's review, which gave it a perfect 5/5, was sponsored by Formlabs, and the reviewer says so up front.
What's great
- It just works. PreForm's Print button slices, sends and starts in one step, and the printer checks the tank and platform are locked.
- Painter-friendly smoothing. Anti-aliasing supersampling softens layer lines on curves while keeping hard edges crisp.
- Open Material Mode is free. No unlock fee for third-party resins.
- Offline and local. Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB-C, and it can run fully air-gapped.
- Easy screen swaps. LCD and heater come out as one module from above.
- Real troubleshooting help. PreForm warnings link straight to support articles.
What to watch
- 35 µm pixels on paper. Mars 5 Ultra is 18 µm; Saturn 4 Ultra 16K is 14 × 19 µm.
- You replace the whole tank. No user-replaceable film: $55 standard, $79 Pro.
- PreForm only. No Chitubox or Lychee, and Open Material Mode uses energy-dose settings.
- Pre-supported files may need tuning. Default profiles printed thin community supports too thin until Formlabs supplied a profile.
- Smaller plate than it sounds. 200 × 125 mm is about a 9.3-inch screen.
- Fine detail is slow. A statue torso at 30 µm took 17+ hours on beta profiles.
- Looser stated accuracy than Form 4. ±0.5% vs ±0.15% on small features.
Form Studio 1 vs. the best resin printers of 2026
On paper, the Studio 1 loses on pixel size to nearly every 14K and 16K rival at its price. It wins on resin handling, materials safety and polish. Prices are US list or common street prices as of October 14, 2026, sorted low to high.

From our San Diego repair bench
Most resin printer repairs we see across San Diego County, from Oceanside to Chula Vista, trace back to three things: torn or cloudy FEP, spilled resin reaching the LCD, and cold resin causing failed prints. The Studio 1 is designed around all three, with a few new maintenance habits of its own.

Book a repairFAQ
How much does the Formlabs Form Studio 1 cost?
$699 for the printer, tank and standard platform. The Complete package with Build Platform Flex and Wash+Cure is $948, and the Professional package with Form Wash V2 and Form Cure V2 is $1,647.
When does it ship?
Orders opened October 14, 2026. Global shipping starts November 16, 2026. Founders Edition colors are available through November 30 or while supplies last.
Can I use Elegoo, Anycubic or Siraya Tech resin?
Yes. Open Material Mode is included for any 405 nm resin, but you need the $79 Resin Tank Pro, you pour resin by hand, and you tune your own settings in PreForm.
Does it work with Chitubox or Lychee?
No. The Form Studio 1 only works with Formlabs' free PreForm software.
Is it really safe to run indoors without ventilation?
The UL GREENGUARD Gold certification applies only to the Studio 1 printing Alpha Resins with the $179 VOC Extractor. Still wear gloves with liquid resin, and ventilate IPA washing.
Is it good for miniatures?
Early reviews say yes. Alpha Model resin and anti-aliasing supersampling are aimed at painters. Expect slower print times at the finest layers, and check that pre-supported files fit the 200 × 125 mm plate.
Form Studio 1 or Form 4?
Form 4 for dental, casting, engineering client work, or the full 23-material library. Studio 1 for hobby, design, classroom and small-studio work.
Can I replace the tank film?
No. When the film wears out, you replace the whole tank: $55 standard, $79 Pro.
The verdict
The Form Studio 1 doesn't win the spec sheet, and it isn't trying to. It's the first resin printer that treats mess, fumes and guesswork as the real problems, and at $699 it pulls Formlabs' pro workflow into the same price band as the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K and Photon P1. If you've avoided resin because of the chores, this is the one to look at. If you chase every micron and love tuning in Chitubox, a 16K Elegoo or Phrozen still gives you more detail per dollar.
Budget realistically: about $948 for the Complete package, $179 for the VOC Extractor if it lives indoors, and a spare $55 tank per resin you run.
