BGR just ranked the eight biggest names in 3D printing from best to worst. We service all eight across San Diego County — so we ran the same list through a different filter: can you get the part, and can you fit it yourself?

The short answer

BGR's ranking measures how good the machines are. Ours measures how cheap the brand is to keep alive after the warranty ends. Both are useful, and they produce genuinely different orders.

Two rankings, both correct

BGR put Bambu Lab first, then Prusa Research, Creality, UltiMaker, Formlabs, Elegoo, Anycubic and Flashforge. The reasoning is sound: the piece weighted build quality and engineering most heavily, gave credit for delivering what a brand's own niche demands, and refused to penalise budget makers for being budget makers. If your question is which company builds the better machine, that order is defensible and we would not argue hard with it.

But that is not the question we get asked on the phone. We get asked the extruder gear is chewed, can you fix it, and what will it cost — usually fourteen months after purchase, which is to say two months after the warranty ended. At that moment, build quality is already sunk. What matters is whether the part exists as a part, whether it ships to a US address this week, and whether replacing it takes a hex key or a service ticket.

So we re-sorted the same eight brands on two axes only: parts availability and repair depth. Everything below comes from our own bench and van across San Diego County. Where we are describing a company's history, ownership, or product specifications rather than our own service experience, that is attributed.

One thing to be clear about before the list: the bottom two positions here are not a quality verdict. Formlabs and UltiMaker rank low on our axes precisely because owner-repair was never their product. Their product is a support contract, and it is a good one. BGR ranked them fourth and fifth for entirely legitimate reasons. Ours is a different measurement, not a demotion.

Prusa Research

Nobody else on this list sells you the individual gear. Prusa sells the gear, publishes the exploded diagram showing where it goes, and keeps the page up years after the machine is discontinued. That single practice is why a decade-old i3 is still a working printer in somebody's garage in Clairemont and a comparable-age machine from most other brands is a shelf.

BGR's history checks out with what is publicly documented: founded in 2012 by Josef Prúša, grown from a basement operation shipping parts in pizza boxes, and now claiming over 1,200 employees and the largest maker position in both Europe and the United States. The piece also fairly notes the tension in Prusa's current direction — the Original Prusa trademark covers printers that are not open source, and the company has been building out paid cloud services. That is a real shift and worth knowing about.

It has not yet reached the parts counter, which is the part we care about. If your priority is a machine you can still own in 2036, this is still the answer. If it is prints per hour, it is not — we went through that trade in detail in our Core One L versus Bambu Lab breakdown.

DISPOSITION → Owner-serviceable indefinitely. The only brand here where we regularly quote a repair cheaper than the customer expected.

Creality

Creality's ranking here is not about polish — BGR is right that the software and fit-and-finish trail Bambu Lab. It is about arithmetic. Millions of Ender-family machines shipped means a third-party parts economy that no other brand has: hotends, boards, screens, belts and bed springs available from a dozen sellers at commodity prices, usually with next-day delivery.

Practically, that means an out-of-warranty Creality is almost never a write-off. When we open one, the question is which of four cheap parts failed, not whether a replacement exists. The community documentation is equally deep: a decade of forum threads means most faults have been diagnosed publicly before you hit them.

The honest catch is that Creality ships a lot of models quickly, and early revisions can be rough — the first-generation K1 is the standard example, largely resolved by the K1C. Our full brand comparison lives in Creality vs. Bambu Lab for 2026.

DISPOSITION → The cheapest brand on this list to keep running. Buy the second revision of any model, not the first.

Bambu Lab

Bambu Lab tops BGR's list and deserves to. These are the best out-of-box machines most people will ever plug in, and the X1 Carbon genuinely reset the category — enough that half the printers on this page borrow its template. Nothing below argues with that.

Third place here is a structural consequence of how they are built. Bambu's engineering approach is modular: the toolhead is an assembly, the AMS is an assembly, the hotend is a cartridge. That is exactly why they are so reliable and so easy to fix quickly — and also why a repair is usually "replace the module" rather than "replace the worn part inside the module." When the module is $40, that is a fine trade. When it is $200, it stings.

The ecosystem question is real and BGR raises it fairly: a 2023 cloud outage produced unexpected print behaviour on machines worldwide, and consumer-rights advocates have raised concerns about the direction of cloud dependency and software gating. Our practical advice has not changed — if you buy Bambu and independence matters to you, run it in LAN mode from day one. Most of what lands in our inbox is AMS feeding trouble, which is usually a twenty-minute fix rather than a parts order.

DISPOSITION → Best machine, module-level service. Budget for assemblies rather than components, and enable LAN mode on setup day.

Elegoo

Elegoo is the value argument on this list, and BGR characterises it well: competent machines that would read as merely adequate on a spec sheet until you check the price, at which point the calculation changes entirely. The Centauri Carbon launching around $299 against CoreXY competition at roughly double that is the clearest example, and the OrangeStorm Giga's very large build volume for well under $3,000 on sale is the other.

From the service side, two things earn it fourth. First, the resin machines are genuinely commodity-serviceable — FEP film and LCD panels are the wear items, both are standard sizes, and neither is locked to the vendor. We run a Saturn 4 Ultra in our own shop for that reason. Second, the FDM line runs on a Klipper base, which means community documentation and configuration access rather than a black box.

The friction is lead time. Official FDM spares can take longer to arrive than Bambu's or Creality's, and the aftermarket has not matured to Creality levels. Plan for that if the printer is doing paid work. Our full resin breakdown is in the 2026 resin printer guide.

DISPOSITION → Cheap to buy, cheap to run, occasionally slow to supply. Keep a spare FEP sheet on the shelf.

Anycubic

Anycubic and Elegoo are close enough that arguing the order is mostly taste, and BGR says as much. The split we see is the same one the community reports: the resin line is the stronger half of the catalogue, and the FDM machines are competitive on price but rougher on software.

That difference shows up directly in service. Resin faults are consumable faults — film, screen, occasionally a Z-axis issue — and consumables are easy to buy. FDM faults more often need a specific assembly, and the US spares channel is thinner than Creality's by a wide margin. It is rarely a dead end, but it is more often a wait.

Worth noting for the history: BGR points out that Anycubic launched with the Kossel, an early independently developed delta printer, before moving to conventional designs. There are no deltas in the current range, which is a small loss for anyone who liked printing tall things. The Kobra S1 shows up regularly in our budget multicolor roundup.

DISPOSITION → Buy the resin machines with confidence. Buy the FDM machines with a spares plan.

Flashforge

Flashforge is the most interesting entry on BGR's list and the one most likely to be underestimated. Rather than flooding the catalogue, it ships a smaller range with more ambition per machine — the piece cites a CoreXY multi-material Creator 5 Pro with a toolhead changer under $1,000, and a dual-extruder Guider with a 600 mm tall build volume for just under $3,000. Toolhead changing at that price is a genuinely aggressive spec.

The recurring criticism in professional reviews is the software and interface, which BGR frames well: investing in software is one of the reasons other brands cannot sell hardware this cheaply, and the disparity shows up in interfaces that feel a generation behind. That is a fair trade if you know you are making it. Pair one with a better third-party slicer and most of the objection evaporates.

Sixth place is about install base, not merit. We see fewer Flashforge machines than Creality or Bambu in San Diego, and that thinner local population means a thinner parts channel and less community documentation when something unusual fails. Nothing about the hardware makes it hard to work on.

DISPOSITION → Strong hardware per dollar, longer part hunts. Excellent second printer, riskier only printer for paid work.

Formlabs

Read this position correctly: Formlabs makes some of the best machines in this entire article. Founded in 2014 by three MIT graduates, it works in SLA and SLS rather than filament, and claims to be the largest supplier of professional printers in those technologies. Reviews of the Form 4 consistently describe fast, accurate, extremely consistent output, and the sensor coverage and business-grade support are real advantages when a failed print costs a client deadline.

It ranks seventh on our axes because those axes measure owner repair, and owner repair is not what Formlabs sells. The tightly closed loop — printer, cartridge, tank, validated material profile — is precisely what produces the reliability. Loosening it would cost the thing customers are paying for.

Our own limit, stated plainly: we do not perform component-level repair on Formlabs hardware. If you have a Form-series machine under a service agreement, the correct call is to the manufacturer, not to us — opening it yourself can affect that agreement. We are happy to help with workflow, post-processing, and materials questions around one, and we do run resin work in-house on consumer machines.

DISPOSITION → The support contract is the product. Buy it, keep it current, and do not open the lid.

UltiMaker

UltiMaker builds arguably the best-assembled FDM hardware in this article. BGR's explanation of the price is accurate and worth repeating: the target customer is enterprise and industrial rather than hobbyist, the machines are manufactured in Europe rather than China, and heavy R&D spending covers in-house filaments and software as well as the printers themselves. Named users include Ford and the Royal Netherlands Air Force. This is equipment built to run long hours and hold tolerance.

Last place on our axes is an economic verdict, not a mechanical one. The machines are not hostile to a screwdriver. But parts move through a reseller channel at enterprise pricing, and once a machine is out of warranty and out of an institutional support arrangement, the repair-versus-replace maths frequently stops favouring repair for an individual owner. We see almost none of these in San Diego homes, and that is the correct outcome — as BGR puts it, if you do not need aerospace-grade parts, this is the wrong tool.

One footnote makers should know: UltiMaker also maintains Cura, which remains one of the most widely used slicers in the world and is free regardless of what printer you own. The company's contribution to the ecosystem is much larger than its unit share suggests.

DISPOSITION → An institutional purchase. If you are buying one without a support arrangement, buy something else.

Where the two rankings disagree

Four brands moved significantly. Each move is a direct consequence of swapping the measurement from build quality to service reality.

Brands are not the decision. Ecosystems are.

The most useful line in BGR's article is the one warning readers not to get hung up on brands — individual models matter more, and any mainstream printer will work for most people off the shelf. We agree, with one amendment drawn from watching people buy their second machine.

The brand does not matter much for printer one. It matters enormously for printer two, because by then you have accumulated things: slicer profiles you tuned, spare nozzles in a drawer, build plates that fit one bed size, a multi-material unit that talks to one protocol, and a set of habits. Those accumulations have a switching cost that never appears on the product page.

What a switch actually costs

  • Build plates. Bed sizes rarely match across brands. A drawer of textured PEI for a 256 mm bed is worth nothing on a 300 mm machine.
  • Multi-material units. These are the single largest stranded cost. An AMS, a CFS and an ACE Pro are not interchangeable, and none carries over.
  • Nozzles and hotends. Quick-swap systems are proprietary. Standard V6-pattern hardware is not, which is a quiet argument for the older platforms.
  • Profiles and habits. Recoverable, but budget a few evenings. Running one slicer across a mixed fleet is the cheapest hedge available.
  • Filament. Mostly portable. Spool-recognition tags are the exception, and they only cost you a convenience feature, not the plastic.

The practical implication: if you already own one printer and are adding a second, the cheapest good machine is usually the one from the same ecosystem — even when a rival wins on paper. If you are buying your first, weight portability higher than the spec sheet suggests.

What San Diego does to all eight of them

Brand rankings assume a neutral room. Ours is not neutral, and after enough house calls the local pattern is unmistakable — it cuts across every brand on this list.

The marine layer is the main antagonist. May and June mornings from the coast through Clairemont push indoor humidity high enough to matter, and it lands hardest on hygroscopic filament. PETG that stringed all spring, TPU that suddenly pops and hisses, nylon that prints visibly weaker — these are moisture calls far more often than machine calls. A sealed box with fresh desiccant fixes more San Diego print problems than any upgrade, and the filament guide covers which materials care most.

Salt air is the coastal tax. Within a mile or so of the water — Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Imperial Beach, Coronado — exposed steel picks up surface corrosion faster than inland machines. Linear rods and unplated fasteners are where we see it. A wipe and a light re-lube on a quarterly schedule is enough; ignoring it for two years is not. Our maintenance schedule has the intervals.

Do not leave a printer or a spool in a parked car. A closed car in an inland San Diego summer reaches temperatures that will soften PLA parts, and plenty of printers have printed structural brackets for themselves. This one has cost more than one customer a working machine.

Long prints cost real money here. SDG&E rates are among the highest in the country, and a 40-hour print on an enclosed machine is not free. It is not enough to change which printer you buy, but it is enough to make a failed 40-hour print annoying twice over. So which one should you actually buy?

The honest answer is that all eight of these brands make printers worth owning, which is BGR's closing point and a correct one. If you want a shorter route:

  • First printer, want it to just work: Bambu Lab. Accept the ecosystem, turn on LAN mode. Start with the beginner picks if it is for a household or a kid.
  • Want to still own it in ten years: Prusa. Pay the premium, get the documentation.
  • Tightest budget, most machine per dollar: Creality or Elegoo. Buy the second revision, not the launch model.
  • Miniatures, dental models, fine detail: start resin, not FDM. Elegoo or Anycubic at the consumer end, Formlabs when a failed print costs a client.
  • Big parts: the size question is its own decision — see the large-format guide.
  • Institution or production floor: UltiMaker or Formlabs, with the support contract, budgeted as part of the purchase rather than bolted on later.

Common questions

Which 3D printer brand is easiest to repair yourself?

Prusa Research, by a clear margin. It is the only brand on this list that routinely sells individual components rather than complete assemblies and publishes the documentation showing how they fit, and it keeps those pages available long after a model is discontinued. Creality is second for a different reason: its install base is large enough that a commodity third-party parts market exists, so replacements are cheap and fast even when official support has moved on.

Is Bambu Lab hard to repair?

Not hard — different. Bambu builds modularly, so most repairs mean swapping an assembly such as a toolhead, hotend cartridge or AMS unit rather than replacing a worn part inside it. That makes repairs fast and reliable but often more expensive per fault than component-level work on an open machine. Official parts ship quickly. The other consideration is cloud and account dependency, which is why we suggest enabling LAN mode when you set the printer up.

Why do Formlabs and UltiMaker rank last here when other reviews rank them highly?

Because this ranking measures owner repairability and parts access, not machine quality. Both companies build excellent hardware aimed at professional and industrial buyers, and their service model is a support contract rather than a screwdriver. BGR ranked them fourth and fifth on build quality and engineering, which is a fair result on that axis. On ours they place last because an individual owner outside a support arrangement will usually find repair uneconomic.

Does the brand matter more than the specific model?

For your first printer, the model matters more — almost any mainstream machine will serve you well. For your second, the brand matters much more, because switching strands your build plates, your multi-material unit, your proprietary nozzles and your tuned profiles. If you already own one printer, the cheapest good second machine is usually from the same ecosystem, even when a competitor wins on the spec sheet.

What fails most often on consumer 3D printers?

In our service work the pattern is consistent across brands: first-layer and bed-adhesion problems lead by a wide margin, followed by nozzle clogs and extruder gear wear, then bed-levelling probe faults, then belt tension after a machine has been moved. On resin printers, FEP film and exposure screens are the main wear items. Very few of these are brand-specific, and most are maintenance rather than failure.
