Creality put four filament channels inside a single printhead. That part is a genuine engineering change. The marketing wrapped around it is doing considerably more work than the company's own charts support — and you can prove it with a calculator.

The whole argument for the SparkX i8 in one picture. The longer the shared path between where four filaments meet and where they exit the nozzle, the more plastic has to be flushed out at every colour change. Creality's claim is that it has shortened that path to almost nothing.

What Creality actually announced

On 19 August 2026, Creality announced the SparkX i8, a four-colour FDM printer built around a new multi-material system it calls QuarTeks. The announcement went out through social media and a single teaser page at crowdfundingfdm.creality.com.

Here is the part that matters before anything else: you cannot buy one, and nobody outside Creality has printed with one. As of today, eight days after the announcement, the teaser page lists no price, no ship date, and no crowdfunding platform. What it does list is an email field. In exchange for your address you get early-bird access, demo previews, and a community invitation. That is the entire offer.

SparkX is Creality's newer sub-brand, the same one that carries the i7 line launched in January 2026. Every specification the company has published for the i8 is a manufacturer's figure, produced in-house, measured against comparison machines Creality does not name. Treat the whole spec sheet accordingly.

The one genuinely new thing: QuarTeks

Strip away the marketing and there is a real piece of engineering here, and it is worth understanding properly because it is the reason the machine exists.

On a conventional multi-colour setup — Bambu's AMS, Creality's own CFS, Anycubic's ACE Pro — four or more spools feed into a selector, and the chosen filament then travels down one shared tube into the hotend. That shared segment is where the waste comes from. When the printer switches from black to white, everything sitting in the shared path has to be pushed out through the nozzle before white prints clean. That flushed plastic becomes the purge tower, the "poop" pile, or wipe material. We broke down the physics of this in detail in our piece on the Bambu Lab H2C and the end of the purge tower, and it is the single longest-running complaint in multicolour printing.

QuarTeks attacks the shared segment directly. Instead of merging the four filaments back at a selector box or at the extruder, Creality carries four independent channels all the way down into the printhead, so they converge immediately above the melt zone. Shrink the shared path and you shrink the purge, because there is almost nothing left in there to flush.

A figure worth pinning down

Creality's own page states the shared filament path twice, and both times gives it as under 1 mm. A number of outlets covering the launch have instead reported 1.7 mm. We fetched the source page directly rather than working from secondary coverage, and we can only confirm the sub-1 mm figure as Creality's published claim. The 1.7 mm number may come from a press briefing or a since-edited page, but it is not what the teaser currently says. Either figure is a large reduction over an AMS-style layout; we mention it because a spec that moves by 70% between sources is a spec nobody has independently measured yet.

If it works as described, this is the most interesting thing Creality has shipped in the category. It also is not the only approach in play: Bambu gives each material its own hotend, Sovol's M1D uses two independent nozzles and a quick-swap second head, and Creality's own KliTek system — which we covered when it was announced — swaps nozzles rather than filament. Creality is now developing three separate answers to the same problem simultaneously, which is worth keeping in mind when you consider how long any one of them will be supported.

The claims ledger

Creality's page leads with three big numbers. All three can be checked right now, using nothing but the charts Creality published alongside them. Here is what happens when you do.

The headline never says what it is five times faster than. Creality's own print-time chart answers that, and the answer changes the claim completely. The chart lists the i8 at 18 h 10 min against three unnamed competing architectures.

The "5×" is real, but only against an external feed system, which is the slowest four-colour architecture on the market. Against a toolchanger, Creality's own data shows the i8 saving fourteen minutes on an eighteen-hour print. That is a 1.3% improvement, comfortably inside the margin you would get from a different filament brand.

The related "save up to 72h" figure checks out arithmetically — it is 90 h 41 m minus 18 h 10 m — but it describes the same best-case comparison.

Technically true, against the weakest rival

Creality footnotes this one itself. The asterisk leads to a note explaining that the zero-gram result was measured on a model printed with no purge waste, and elsewhere the page clarifies the mechanism: for select models, the i8 redirects purge material into the model's own infill.

That is not zero waste. That is relocated waste. The filament is still extruded; it is just deposited somewhere structurally useful instead of onto a tower. It is a reasonable feature, but it is also a slicer capability that has existed for years — "flush into infill" and "flush into object" are standard options in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer, both of which we cover in our slicer comparison. Any AMS-equipped machine can do this on a model with enough infill to absorb the purge.

The tell is that Creality contradicts itself on the same page. The QuarTeks section claims 2.7× less filament waste. A machine that wastes 2.7× less is not a machine that wastes zero. The 2.7× figure is the honest one, and it is a good number. The zero is a marketing artefact.

Does not hold as printed

438 kg and $1,500 saved per year

This is the one that falls apart fastest. Creality's yearly test is built on 3,000 total colour changes and reports 438 kg of filament saved, over 400 spools, worth roughly $1,500. Divide those numbers into each other and they stop agreeing.

A purge on an AMS-style machine runs a few grams. Call it eight on a bad flush from black to white. Creality's arithmetic requires each colour change to be saving 146 grams, which is roughly twenty times the entire purge, not the saving on it. And the dollar figure implies filament at $3.42/kg, a price that does not exist at retail anywhere. At a realistic $16/kg, 438 kg would be worth about $7,000, not $1,500.

Both errors point the same way: the kilogram figure and the colour-change figure describe different things. Creality's single-dragon test shows a saving of 435.98 g per print. Multiply that by roughly a thousand prints and you land on 438 kg — which would mean the "3,000 colour changes" label is counting something other than what a slicer calls a colour change. Whatever the explanation, the headline cannot be read the way it is written.

Internally inconsistent

The numbers that do hold up

It would be unfair to stop there, because Creality also published four individual model tests, and those are the most credible data on the page. Each compares the i8 against an unnamed "others" baseline using Creality Hyper PLA.

Time gains cluster between 2.2× and 2.9×. Filament gains run 1.7× to 3.4×. What makes these worth taking seriously is not the size of the numbers but their consistency across four different models with different colour-change densities. That is what real data tends to look like.

It is also, quietly, the story: Creality's own best evidence supports roughly a 2–3× improvement, and the company chose to lead with 5× and zero instead. If the 2–3× holds up under independent testing, the i8 is a legitimately significant machine. The marketing is undercutting the engineering.

Underneath the printhead, it's an i7

Take QuarTeks out and the i8 is closely related to the SparkX i7 that launched in January. Same build volume, same speed ceiling, same temperatures, same plate.

Two specs deserve flagging. The 100 °C bed and open frame put this firmly in PLA, PETG and TPU territory. ABS, ASA and polycarbonate want an enclosure and a hotter bed; they will warp and delaminate on a machine like this. And 2.4 GHz-only wireless is a real constraint in a dense apartment building or a busy makerspace, where the 2.4 band is usually a traffic jam.

On the 500 mm/s figure: that is a firmware ceiling, not a printing speed. It is worth even less on a bedslinger carrying a four-channel printhead, because every gram of added toolhead mass makes the machine harder to keep accurate at speed. Input shaping helps. It does not repeal physics.

What we'd want to know before recommending it

This is where we depart from the launch coverage, because we repair these machines for a living and the questions a repair tech asks are different from the ones a spec sheet answers. None of the following is a criticism of the i8. They are the gaps we would need filled before we told a customer to buy one.

Five unanswered questions

  • What happens when a channel jams inside the printhead? An AMS is an external box. When it misfeeds you open a lid, clear the path, and get on with your day. QuarTeks moves four filament paths into the toolhead, which is the most awkward assembly on any printer to reach, and the one where a jam is hottest and most fused. Four channels means four places to jam in the worst location. That may be a fine trade for the waste savings. But it changes what a bad day looks like, and it is not in the marketing.
  • How does a 5-second hotend swap work with four loaded channels? Creality advertises both a quick-release hotend and four filament channels converging under a millimetre above the nozzle. Those two features are in tension. If the merge point sits inside the hotend assembly, the quick-release part is a more expensive consumable than a normal nozzle. If it sits above, the sub-1 mm figure is being measured to something other than the nozzle exit. Either way, you presumably have to unload four filaments before that five-second swap. Nobody has shown this on video yet.
  • Where do the four spools live? The i7 used an external CFS Lite drybox. The i8's channels are in the head, but the spools still have to sit somewhere, and no published image or spec resolves whether they get an enclosed, desiccated housing or open holders. In San Diego that is not a minor detail — more on this below.
  • What is the parts pipeline? QuarTeks is a brand-new mechanism on a sub-brand that is under two years old, and it is Creality's third parallel multi-colour architecture. We still stock parts for machines from 2019. The question for any new proprietary printhead is whether you will be able to buy a replacement in 2029.
  • Who has actually tested one? As of today: nobody outside Creality. Every figure in this article, including the ones we defended, is a manufacturer's number.

The San Diego angle

A few things about this machine land differently here than they would in Denver or Phoenix.

The marine layer and four open channels

Coastal San Diego humidity is the quiet killer of multicolour printing, and it gets worse the more spools you have loaded at once. A four-colour job means four spools sitting exposed for the length of the print, and the i8's headline feature is prints that run 15 to 30 hours. PETG and TPU pick up moisture fast enough that a spool left out through a May marine layer can start popping and stringing by the second day of a long job.

An enclosed AMS-style box at least gives you somewhere to put desiccant. Until Creality shows us the i8's spool arrangement, we would budget for a dry box regardless. This is the single most common root cause we find on multicolour print failures in coastal ZIP codes, and it is almost never the printer's fault.

SDG&E and long prints

San Diego electricity rates are among the highest in the country, so print time has a real dollar cost here in a way it does not in most of the US. A bedslinger of this size averages somewhere around 110–140 W over a long job. Creality's best-case 72.5 hours saved works out to roughly 8–10 kWh. Multiply by your own rate to get your own number — at $0.45/kWh that is about $4 per print.

Modest, but it points the right way, and the throughput matters more than the electricity. If you are selling prints, a machine that turns a 40-hour job into a 15-hour job changes how many jobs you can take in a week. That is the real argument for this category, and it is the one Creality buried under the 5× headline.

No Micro Center, no walk-in fix

There is still no Micro Center in San Diego. When a proprietary printhead fails here, you are not driving somewhere to swap it — you are filing a warranty claim and waiting on a package from overseas. That is survivable on a machine with a conventional hotend, because generic replacements exist. It is a longer outage on a first-generation four-channel assembly with no aftermarket.

So who should be interested?

Wait, if you are buying a printer this quarter. There is no price, no date, and no platform. There is nothing here to buy and no way to compare it against machines you can actually order today. Watch it, if you print multicolour regularly and waste bothers you. A consistent 2–3× reduction in time and material is a genuinely meaningful gain for anyone running colour-heavy work. Sign up for the announcement list if you want, but sign up for the price, not the promises.

Be cautious about the crowdfunding, whenever it opens. Creality is an established, publicly listed manufacturer, which puts it in a very different risk bracket from a first-time campaign. That reduces the risk of the money vanishing. It does not reduce the risk of a first-generation mechanism shipping with first-generation problems, and crowdfunding backers are the people who find those problems. If you want the i8, there is a strong case for letting the early backers do the testing and buying at retail three months later.

For price expectations: the i7 launched at a $399 MSRP with a $339 early-bird, and the i7 Color Combo was listed at $359 direct as of the i8's announcement. Since the i8 is largely an i7 with a new toolhead, somewhere near or modestly above the i7 Combo is the reasonable guess. That is inference, not information. Creality has published nothing.

What is QuarTeks, and how is it different from an AMS?

QuarTeks is Creality's name for the SparkX i8's four-channel printhead. Does the SparkX i8 really print with zero waste?

No, and Creality's own footnotes say so. The zero-gram claim describes select models where purge material is redirected into the model's own infill rather than onto a purge tower. The plastic is still extruded, just placed somewhere useful. That capability already exists as a slicer setting in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer. Creality's more defensible figure, stated elsewhere on the same page, is 2.7× less waste.

How much does the Creality SparkX i8 cost?

Creality has not announced a price, a ship date, or even which crowdfunding platform it will use. For context, the SparkX i7 launched at a $399 MSRP with a $339 early-bird price, and the i7 Color Combo was listed at $359 direct on the day the i8 was announced. Can the SparkX i8 print ABS, ASA or polycarbonate?

Not well. It is an open-frame bedslinger with a 100 °C maximum bed temperature. ABS and ASA need a heated, enclosed chamber to avoid warping and layer splitting, and polycarbonate needs more still. The i8's published specs suit PLA, PETG and TPU. If you need ASA for something that lives outdoors in the San Diego sun, you want an enclosed machine.

Should I back the SparkX i8 when the campaign opens?

That depends on how much you want to be a tester. Creality is an established manufacturer, so the risk of a campaign failing to deliver is low compared with a first-time company. The real risk is that QuarTeks is a brand-new mechanism and early backers are the people who discover its first-generation problems. If you print multicolour constantly and the waste savings matter to your bottom line, the early-bird price may justify it. Otherwise, waiting for independent reviews and retail availability costs you very little.

Does Dreaming3D sell or service the SparkX i8?
