7 Ways to Make Filament Last Longer

Vacuum seal between sessions
After every print session, seal your spool in a vacuum bag with fresh silica gel. This is the single highest-impact step, especially for Nylon and TPU.

Reactivate your desiccant
Silica gel saturates over time. Reactivate it at 120°C for 2 hours in a regular oven. Old desiccant gives false security — humidity still creeps in.

Always pre-dry Nylon & TPU
Even freshly opened Nylon and TPU spools can absorb enough moisture in transit to cause print failures. A 4-hour drying cycle is cheap insurance.

Live-dry during long prints
For prints over 2 hours with hygroscopic materials, run your dryer during the print via the pass-through port. Filament absorbs moisture even mid-print.

Keep ambient RH under 40%
A small dehumidifier in your print room makes every other step more effective and reduces how often you need to re-dry spools.

Don't trust "sealed" packaging
Manufacturer bags vary widely. Test new spools with a short print before a long job — even factory-sealed filament can arrive wet.

Use a hygrometer
A cheap digital hygrometer inside your storage box tells you when humidity is creeping up. Aim for under 15% RH inside sealed storage.

On food dehydrators: They can work for PLA and PETG in a pinch, but most cap at 70°C and standard 1kg spools don't fit trays without modification. With dedicated dryers like the Space Pi now priced similarly, there's little reason to improvise.
