San Diego Unified’s first day is Monday, August 10 — per the district’s published 2026–27 calendar, so basically now — and this year every classroom in California walks in under a brand-new rule about phones. Teachers are about to solve a hundred small equipment problems out of their own wallets, the way they do every August. Here’s the case for solving some of them in plastic, locally, for less than you’d think.

A quick word on who this post is for. We’ve written plenty for parents and students — classes and tutoring, printers for kids, learning Tinkercad. This one is for the people running the room: teachers, aides, site techs, and the PTA parent who got voluntold to “look into the phone thing.” No printer required. You describe it, we model it, we print it, you pick it up or we ship it.

The phone thing, first

In September 2024, California passed AB 3216 — the Phone-Free School Act — which required every school district, charter school, and county office of education in the state to adopt a policy limiting or prohibiting student smartphone use, no later than July 1, 2026. That deadline just passed. The 2026–27 school year starting this week is the first one where every campus in the state is supposed to have a policy in force. What that policy actually says varies a lot by district — some are bell-to-bell bans, some restrict classroom time only, and most carve out exceptions for documented medical needs and IEP or 504 plans. And Sacramento may not be done: a stricter follow-up bill pushing full bell-to-bell bans statewide by 2027 has been moving through the legislature as of this writing. Check your own district’s adopted policy — we print caddies, we don’t write policy.

What doesn’t vary: somebody at every school suddenly needs a place to put thirty-six phones, six periods a day, without losing one. That’s a physical-storage problem, and there are three basic ways schools are handling it.

Honesty first, as usual: if a $15 hanging chart solves your problem, buy the chart. Where printed caddies earn their keep is everywhere fabric fails — the teacher who wants six-slot banks on each table group instead of one wall chart, the room that needs exactly 34 numbered slots that match the seating chart, the slot that breaks in February and gets reprinted for pocket change instead of replacing the whole thing, the caddy with a cable channel so the “my phone is my medical device” kid’s phone charges while it sits. Numbered slots also settle the daily “whose phone is this” dispute in about one second, and an empty slot 23 tells you who hasn’t turned theirs in before you’ve finished taking roll.

We print these in PETG rather than PLA when they’ll live near a sunny window or get handled hard — more on materials below — and we can match slot count, spacing for thick cases, room number, even your room’s color scheme. A teacher name plate on the top rail costs nearly nothing extra in print time.

Math manipulatives that survive middle school

Commercial manipulative sets exist, and the good ones are fine. The problem teachers actually describe to us is attrition: fraction tiles walk off a few pieces at a time until the set is useless, and replacing “just the one-eighths” means buying a whole new box. Printing flips that. The marginal cost of one more one-eighth tile is a few cents of filament and a slot in a batch job. Some of what we’ve printed or would happily print for classrooms:

Fraction tiles & circles

Color-coded by denominator, engraved labels so the markings never rub off. Lost pieces reprint individually — tell us which denominators walked away this semester.

Algebra tiles

x, x², and unit tiles in two colors for positive/negative. Rigid plastic stacks and slides on desks better than foam, and doesn’t peel.

Base-10 blocks

Units, rods, flats, and cubes. Batch beautifully — a class set is mostly unattended machine time, which is exactly what keeps the quote down.

Geometric solids

Prisms, pyramids, cones, spheres — including open-top versions you can fill with rice or water for volume demos that students actually remember.

Tangrams & pattern blocks

Thick enough for small hands, engraved outlines optional. Multicolor sets sort themselves visually at cleanup time.

Clinometers & math tools

Simple angle-measuring clinometers for the trig unit where students measure the flagpole. Also: giant demonstration protractors and compasses for the whiteboard.

One quoting note we’d rather you hear now than on the invoice: multicolor FDM printing on AMS-style systems generates purge waste every time the machine changes color, and that waste is real material and real time. Single-color parts in batches — red eighths in one job, blue quarters in another — usually quote meaningfully cheaper than one rainbow job. We’ll always tell you which way is cheaper for your set.

Science, geography, and the demo shelf

Display and demonstration models are where printing gets genuinely fun. Molecule kits with correctly-angled bond geometry. Scale planet sets where the classroom finally sees how absurd the Sun is. Layered topographic terrain of San Diego County — there is something great about a kid finding their own neighborhood canyon in plastic relief on the geography table. Cell and anatomy models print well too, with the standard caveat we put on everything in this category: these are teaching displays, not medical devices, and we don’t print anything intended for patient contact. For the demo shelf, though? PLA is cheap, colorful, and perfect.

If you teach engineering or CTE and want custom fixtures, jigs, or kit parts for a specific curriculum unit, that’s a conversation rather than a catalog — bring us the lesson plan and we’ll figure out the part. The small stuff that eats your prep period

None of these are glamorous. All of them are the kind of thing teachers buy three times a year because the store-bought version keeps breaking:

Whiteboard rail organizers

Marker holders with eraser bays, sized to the markers you actually use, clipped or adhesive-mounted to the tray so they stop migrating.

Hall passes that survive

Room number engraved into the plastic, not stickered on. PETG shrugs off being dropped, sat on, and “accidentally” flexed by every kid who carries it.

Chromebook cart clips

Cable guides and numbered slot tags for the cart, so cord spaghetti stops being a Friday afternoon job. Broken cart bits can often be reverse-engineered and reprinted.

Table caddies & turn-in trays

Pencil cups with table numbers, supply caddies with bays that match your actual supplies, tray label plates that snap on instead of taping on.

Headphone hooks & door hardware

Under-desk headphone hooks for testing season, door stops, magnetic hallway sign holders, over-door hangers shaped for your door’s actual lip.

TPU chair glides

Flexible feet for the chairs that screech and scratch. Printed in TPU sized to your exact chair leg — this is the one custodians thank us for.

Comfort and inclusion, carefully framed

TPU pencil grips in the exact diameter a student needs. Weighted-feel desk fidgets that are quiet by design — whether fidget tools belong in your room is your call and your school’s policy, not ours. Tactile label tags for shelves and cubbies, including braille-labeled versions for tactile learners. Left-handed scissor trainers, page holders, adapted crayon grips. We’ll say the honest thing here the same way we said it about anatomy models: these are comfort and accessibility aids, not medical or therapeutic devices, and anything tied to a specific student’s documented needs should be specced by the specialist who knows that student — we’re happy to print exactly what an OT or resource teacher describes.

What this actually costs

Our service rates are $7 per hour of machine time for FDM and $9 per hour for resin, plus material. Classroom gear is almost all FDM — resin only enters the picture for fine-detail display models, and we keep resin parts out of the hands-on bin for younger grades as a matter of policy.

Illustrative ballparks — and we mean illustrative, because size, infill, and material swing these numbers: a six-slot desktop phone bank is typically a single-digit-hours print; a full numbered wall rail for 36 phones is a multi-day batch across several jobs; a class set of fraction circles is mostly unattended overnight machine time, which is the cheap kind. Small organizers and hall passes are often in coffee-money territory each once they’re batched.

The real answer is a quote: text us a photo, a sketch, or a link to a file, tell us how many, and we’ll price it before anything prints. Site funds, PTA purchase orders, and “I’m a teacher paying out of pocket, be gentle” are all normal here. Teachers fund their own classrooms famously enough that we don’t need a statistic to prove it — batch pricing exists for exactly this reason.

Why a local shop instead of a marketplace listing shipped from who-knows-where: you can describe the change you need (“same caddy, but slots wide enough for OtterBox cases”) and get that, not the closest existing SKU. Also, when slot 17 breaks in March, you message us and get slot 17 back — that repair-instead-of-replace loop only works with somebody local. Pickup in Carmel Valley or shipping anywhere in San Diego County and beyond.

If your school already owns printers

A lot of San Diego campuses have a printer or three — in the library, the STEM lab, the CTE room — and a decent share of them are sitting dead under a dust cover because they clogged in week three of last year and nobody had time to fix a machine on top of teaching. That’s a solvable problem. Our mobile repair service comes to campuses across San Diego County — the printer stays in the classroom, we come to it. Two coastal-classroom specifics worth knowing: filament that’s been sitting open near the marine layer all summer absorbs moisture and prints brittle, stringy junk, so budget for a filament dryer or sealed storage before you blame the machine; and if the lab runs printers all day, San Diego electricity at SDG’E’s roughly $0.35/kWh rates is a real line item worth mentioning to whoever pays the site’s utility bill.

We also do teacher training — one-on-one or small group, on your machines, on your campus — and short-term printer rentals if you want a machine in the room for a single unit instead of a permanent commitment. Free options first, because that’s how we do this

Library labs cap print time per session, which is exactly why they’re great for one pencil cup and wrong for thirty-six numbered phone slots. Use the free thing for the small thing. Teacher FAQ

Is 3D printing cheaper than just buying classroom stuff on Amazon?

Sometimes no, and we’ll tell you when. Mass-produced generic items — a plain pencil cup, a $15 fabric pocket chart — are hard to beat on price. Printing wins when you need custom (your slot count, your chair legs, your room number), when you need durable, or when you need replacement parts for a set instead of a whole new set. The repair-one-piece economics are where printing quietly demolishes retail over a school year.

What materials are appropriate for a classroom?

PLA for display models and light-duty items; PETG for anything handled daily, dropped often, or living in sunlight; TPU for flexible parts like grips and chair glides. All are printed in-shop and arrive as solid, finished plastic objects. We default to FDM for anything younger students will handle constantly, and keep resin prints on the display shelf for the lower grades.

Can you print cartoon-character toppers or logo items for my class?

Trademarked and copyrighted characters aren’t something we’ll print for sale — that’s an intellectual-property line we don’t cross, for your protection and ours. Original designs, school mascots your site has the rights to, generic animals, and anything we design fresh for you: absolutely.

How long does a class set take?

Days, not hours — a 36-slot caddy system or a full manipulative set is many hours of machine time batched across jobs. If you need it for the first week of a unit, message us two weeks out and you’ll be comfortable. Single small items often turn around much faster; rush needs are worth asking about, honestly answered.

Our school’s printer is broken. Do you fix those?
